Real therapy for real life, complicated love, & the stuff you don’t post about.
A direct, collaborative, and zero-judgment virtual space for high-achieving New Yorkers and couples ready to untangle conflict, enforce healthy boundaries, and finally stop running on emotional fumes.
What 12,000+ New Yorkers turn to Amelia for
"The first therapist who gave me actionable clarity in session one."
Verified patients consistently note Amelia's ability to cut through the noise, challenge counterproductive scripts with deep warmth, and create an atmosphere where couples and individuals feel immediately safe to drop their defenses.
Therapy shouldn’t feel like an interrogation or a generic lecture.
Too many New Yorkers have endured therapy that feels like passive nodding, clinical detachment, or generic textbook platitudes that don’t fit modern reality.
My practice is built on systemic collaboration: looking at you not as a diagnosis in isolation, but in the context of your relationships, family history, cultural background, and everyday pressures.
"Some people call me Amelia. Some people call me Maria. I just hope you call me when you need an unbiased, safe space where you can be totally real."
- ✕ Passive 50 minutes of "Mmhmm, and how does that make you feel?"
- ✕ Stiff, clinical distance with zero human relatability
- ✕ Treating symptoms without untangling relationship & family systems
- ✕ Buried in a crowded directory grid with 50 stranger profiles
- ✓ Direct & Collaborative: Active dialogue, pattern identification, and actionable takeaways from day one.
- ✓ Culturally Aware & Grounded: An authentic, warm, and zero-judgment New York perspective.
- ✓ Systemic Perspective: 10+ years untangling couples dynamics, generational patterns, and boundaries.
- ✓ Private Telehealth Ease: Seamless Zoom sessions fitting your demanding work & life schedule.
Where We Do The Real Work
Whether you are on the brink in your relationship, breaking generational cycles with your family, or exhausted from people-pleasing, choose where you need support right now:
For couples tired of having the exact same fight on repeat.
Most couples don't break up because they stopped loving each other; they break up because they stopped feeling heard. We uncover the unspoken hurt beneath the anger, dismantle the defensive walls, and rebuild genuine emotional safety.
- Constant escalation over small, everyday triggers
- Emotional withdrawal, stonewalling, or walking on eggshells
- Loss of physical intimacy and feeling like roommates
- Cross-cultural differences or in-law boundary friction
- De-escalation tools to halt the spiral in real time
- Understanding your mutual attachment injuries
- Clear communication protocols that honor both partners
- Rekindled warmth, playful connection, and trust
"My partner and I were convinced we were fundamentally incompatible. Amelia helped us see that our fights weren't about the dishes or the schedule, but about fear of losing each other. She saved our marriage."
Saying "no" without drowning in guilt, panic, or over-explaining.
If you are chronically over-functioning for everyone in your life while running on empty yourself, you don't have a time management problem. You have a boundary problem. We help you unlearn people-pleasing as a survival mechanism.
- Saying yes immediately and dreading it five minutes later
- Feeling responsible for managing everyone else's emotional state
- Resentment quietly building up toward family, partners, or work
- Terrified that setting a boundary will make people abandon you
- Clean, guilt-free scripts to hold your ground with grace
- Setting firm boundaries with toxic or demanding family members
- Protecting your peace without becoming cold or defensive
- Reclaiming your evening hours and emotional capacity
"Amelia showed me that a boundary is not an attack on someone else; it's an invitation for them to treat me with respect. I finally have my life back."
Navigating conscious uncoupling, heartbreak, and post-split rebirth.
Ending a marriage or major partnership is one of the most disorienting experiences a person can endure. Whether you are contemplating whether to leave, in the middle of divorce proceedings, or learning to co-parent peacefully, you need an unbiased advocate.
- Discernment counseling: deciding whether to stay or part ways
- Grief processing and detaching from the future you planned
- Constructive co-parenting agreements that protect children
- Rebuilding your identity, finances, and confidence after separation
- Clarity over chaotic second-guessing
- Dignified communication that avoids bitter legal crossfire
- Healthy emotional boundaries with your former partner
- A powerful blueprint for your next chapter of life
"Staying for the kids was never about the kids. Amelia helped me see how much harm an unhappy home was doing to all of us. She guided our coparenting transition with incredible grace."
Breaking generational cycles so your kids don't have to heal from you.
With over 10 years of specialized experience in family behavior therapy and child development, Amelia guides parents who want to lead with conscious attunement rather than reactive discipline or generational trauma.
- Parental rage and feeling triggered by your child’s emotions
- Aligning parenting styles when you and your partner disagree
- Handling behavioral challenges with firm, loving boundaries
- Protecting your children from external family dysfunction
- Emotional regulation tools when patience wears thin
- Parenting strategies grounded in developmental psychology
- Confidence in your decisions without mom-guilt or dad-guilt
- A calm, loving household culture where children thrive
"Amelia's background in family behavioral therapy is unmatched. She doesn't judge the messy moments; she gives you exact practical tools to de-escalate bedtime battles and connect with your child."
Calling all New York girlies tired of situationships, ghosting, & anxious spiraling.
Dating in New York can feel like an emotional marathon where vulnerability is punished and red flags are excused as "busy schedules." We help you decipher your attachment style, spot toxic loops early, and date with unapologetic high self-regard.
- Over-analyzing text messages and obsessing over timing
- Consistently attracted to emotionally unavailable partners
- Losing your personality and hobbies the moment you like someone
- Severe dating app burnout and feeling like "there are no good ones left"
- Shifting from anxious attachment into secure self-trust
- Vetting partners based on consistency rather than chemistry alone
- Walking away at the first sign of disrespect without looking back
- Attracting a partner who actively chooses and cherishes you
"I used to lose my mind every time a guy took three hours to text back. Amelia helped me rewire my nervous system and realize my worth isn't dictated by someone else's attention."
For high-achievers who look like they have it all together on paper.
You can have the career, the apartment, and the social circle, while secretly carrying a relentless inner critic that tells you you're never doing enough. Therapy with Amelia is where you put down the performance and learn to actually like yourself.
- High-functioning anxiety that masks itself as productivity
- Imposter syndrome in competitive NYC corporate and creative spaces
- Perfectionism that leads to paralyzing procrastination
- Generational expectations and cultural guilt
- Quiet confidence anchored in self-compassion
- Nervous system regulation that doesn't require burnout
- Unlearning the belief that your value equals your productivity
- Genuine fulfillment in your daily life and relationships

Amelia provides itemized Superbills after every session so you can easily submit for Out-of-Network (OON) mental health reimbursement with major carriers (e.g., Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare). Most clients with OON benefits receive 50%–80% reimbursement depending on their plan.
Everything you need to know before your first session.

Book Consultation →Extensive clinical research confirms that telehealth is just as effective as in-person therapy, with the added benefit of eliminating commute stress and allowing you to speak from the comfort of your own safe space. For couples, it allows both partners to join from their home or even separate work offices when needed.
For dedicated couples work, having both partners present is ideal so that neither person feels sidelined. However, if your partner is hesitant or resistant, working with Amelia individually on your own relationship patterns and boundaries often creates a powerful positive shift in the entire relationship dynamic.
Amelia Sonny holds a Master of Science (MS) degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with over 10 years of experience in behavioral therapy and family systems. She holds a Marriage and Family Therapist Limited Permit (MFT-LP) in New York State and provides clinical care under licensed clinical supervision.
Amelia is an out-of-network provider and affiliated with select networks via her Zocdoc profile. For out-of-network claims, we supply monthly Superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many clients receive substantial coverage for out-of-network psychotherapy.
The initial intake session is an open, collaborative conversation. We discuss what currently feels overwhelming, map out your relationship history or personal background, and clarify what concrete outcomes you want to achieve. You will leave session one with a clear sense of how we will work together and initial insights to reflect on.
Due to clinical state licensing laws, clients must be physically located within New York State at the time of their virtual Zoom appointments.
Stop comparison-shopping your mental health.
You deserve a space that actually feels like you.
